Migraine is a debilitating collection of neurological symptoms that usually includes a severe throbbing pain on one side of the head.

Massage therapy helps relieve migraine headaches by reducing stress, improving, sleep, and relieving muscular tension - common migraine triggers.

Attacks last between 4 and 72 hours and are often accompanied by one or more of the following: visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, extreme sensitivity to sound, light, touch and smell, and tingling or numbness in the extremities or face. Of course, everyone is different, and symptoms vary by person and sometimes by attack.

According the Migraine Research Foundation, migraine is a very common disease that affects 38 million men, women, and children in the United States.  Nearly 12% of Americans suffer from migraine, more than asthma and diabetes combined!

The current theory of the source of migraine pain focuses on how the brain works. Researchers now believe that migraine is a disorder involving nerve pathways and brain chemicals. Triggers for a migraine headache vary from person to person, but commonly include certain foods and food additives, sensory stimuli (bright lights, strong smells), weather changes, hormonal changes, sleep disruption, stress, and muscular tension.

Massage therapy helps relieve migraine headaches by reducing stress, improving, sleep, and relieving muscular tension - common migraine triggers. In a 2006 study published in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine, massage therapy recipients exhibited fewer migraine headaches and better sleep quality than the control group. A 1998 study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience found that massage therapy decreased the occurrence of headaches, sleep disturbances and distress symptoms in adults with migraine.

The addition of essential oils through aromatherapy can help hasten migraine relief by helping you relax and relieve head and neck tension.  We often use doTERRA's Past Tense blend to help relieve tension and stress.

Ideally, migraine sufferers receive regular massage to help relieve stress and muscular tension to help prevent headaches.  However, even an occasional massage can help relieve the pain!
